Trump, Biden to appear at top of state’s presidential primary ballot
President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday will appear on the top ballot lines in the upcoming Republican and Democratic presidential preference primaries in August.
Secretary of the State Denise W. Merrill selected the order of the two Republican candidates and the three Democratic candidates that will appear on the Aug. 11 primary ballots.
After Biden, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders will appear second on the Democratic ballot, and Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard will be third. After Trump, California businessman Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente will appear on the Republican ballot.
There will be an “uncommitted” line on each party’s primary ballot for voters who choose to vote, but not for any of the listed candidates.
“I very much hope everyone comes out to vote because this is your voice, and even though it seems settled I think it is still important for people to come out and express themselves,” Merrill said.
The presidential preference primaries were originally scheduled for April 28, but Gov. Ned Lamont initially postponed the party contests to June 2 due to the coronavirus pandemic., and he then pushed back the date to Aug. 11.
The primary elections are going forward because Sanders, Gabbard and De La Fuente declined to drop out, Merrill said.
