Americans headed to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 3 to select their choice for president, but Barnwell County voters were closely watching the local races for sheriff and coroner.
These were the only two local races with more than one candidate.
After all votes were tallied, Republican Steven “Grits” Griffith emerged victorious for Barnwell County Sheriff while Republican Denise Gibson was elected the new Barnwell County Coroner.
Griffith, who is currently Chief Deputy at the Barnwell County Sheriff’s Office, will take over for long-time Sheriff Ed Carroll who is retiring at the end of the year. Griffith has 42 years of law enforcement experience, most of which has been in Barnwell County. He beat out Democratic candidate John Trottie, who is a former sheriff’s deputy.
“I am truly honored to have been elected to serve as your next sheriff of Barnwell County. I vow to each of you to use my experience and knowledge to run an efficient office and be as transparent and available as possible. I look forward to this opportunity to help make Barnwell County safe and will work, along with my employees, to build trust and confidence between our office and you as citizens,” said Griffith, who appreciates all of the support, especially the prayers.
