Slow but steady: Why ballots are still being counted in New Haven

Despite the late hour, they were checking and double-checking names against votes cast on the machines, with the stacks of ballots vetted against the registered voter list.

Some were seasoned poll workers, but others were new to the process, particularly the business of tabulating absentee ballots. That process was slow, by Wednesday afternoon the number of absentee ballots was not higher than the low number of votes cast in person at the polls in the Democratic and Republican primaries on Tuesday. But the total absentee ballots could come in around 60 percent.
